Historic Mission Dolores

MIssion Dolores in the 1840s. The chapel we see today is a rectangular adobe building 114 feet long, 22 feet wide, and 21 feet high from floor to ceiling. The walls are four feet thick, except for the walls facing Dolores Street, which are ten feet thick.

Mission Dolores Today

Mission Dolores Chapel today. “The seventh religious settlement established as part of the California chain of missions, Misión San Francisco de Asís, was dedicated by Father Junípero Serra on October 9, 1776; construction of mission buildings was completed 1784. While Mission Dolores has none of the usual arches, arcades and towers which adorn the more elaborate missions, its massive simplicity makes it impressive.” (Noehill.com) The settlement was named for St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order.
